Air and Gas Purification
Carus Catalysts
Carus manufactures a series of manganese-based catalysts, called CARULITE® catalysts. These Hopcalite® type catalysts (manganese dioxide/copper oxide) are used for breathable air purification, emission air purification, and process air purification.
Specific applications include the destruction of carbon monoxide, ozone, and ethylene oxide as well as the removal of certain compounds and odors. CARULITE® catalysts are available in granular form in various size distributions as well as in powder form for ozone removal applications. One unique aspect of CARULITE® catalysts is its ability to destroy ozone and carbon monoxide at room temperatures, when used with recommended operating conditions.
Carbon Monoxide
CARULITE® 300 catalysts are used to effectively destroy carbon monoxide in compressed breathing air filters, escape mask filters, and in cryogenic gas purification.
The versatility and effectiveness of CARULITE 300 catalysts make it the benchmark technology for removal of deadly carbon monoxide from compressed breathing air sources. It also provides for removal of carbon monoxide in escape masks, as well as in the production of ultra-high purity nitrogen, oxygen, and argon. Ambient temperature destruction of carbon monoxide coupled with long catalyst lifetime provides a cost-effective solution to the removal of carbon monoxide.
Cryogenic Air Purification
CARULITE 300 catalysts are an essential part of cryogenic air purification systems designed to produce ultra-high purity nitrogen, oxygen and argon. Ultra-high purity gases are used in the production of semiconductors. CARULITE 300 catalysts are used to convert carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide, which can then be removed from the gas stream.
Compressed Breathing Air
CARULITE 300 catalysts are an essential part of air purification systems used for the removal of carbon monoxide and other gasses from compressed air sources. Typical applications for compressed breathing air includes:
- Firefighting
- SCUBA Diving
- Medical
- Spray Painting
- Sand Blasting
Escape Masks
Escape mask filters are used to remove carbon monoxide and other dangerous gases encountered during a fire. CARULITE 300 catalysts are used in the escape mask filter to destroy toxic and dangerous carbon monoxide. These masks are designed to provide the wearer sufficient time to escape to a safe environment. CARULITE 300 catalysts are widely used in escape mask filters that meet European EN 403 specifications.
Ozone Destruction
CARULITE® 200 granular catalysts are used to effectively destroy ozone emitted from various off-gas emissions, converting toxic ozone to oxygen. Ozone in the upper atmosphere protects us from harmful radiation, but excess ozone in the air we breathe causes serious health problems, corrodes most metals, and damages most plastics.
The versatility and effectiveness of CARULITE 200 granular catalysts make it the benchmark technology for destruction of toxic and corrosive emissions of ozone. Ambient temperature destruction of ozone coupled with long catalyst lifetime provides a cost-effective solution to the problem of ozone emissions.
Water Off-Gas
CARULITE 200 granular catalyst converts ozone into oxygen through a catalytic reaction. CARULITE 200 granular catalysts are not consumed by ozone and have an extensive lifetime, normally several years.
Ozone is used as an oxidant and disinfectant in both potable water and wastewater treatment. The off-gas ozone is then converted to oxygen in a destruct system with the CARULITE 200 catalyst.
Catalytic destruction of ozone with the CARULITE 200 catalyst is more cost effective than thermal destruction of ozone, due to lower energy costs and less expensive materials of construction. CARULITE 200 granular catalyst is used successfully in thousands of installations worldwide to meet stringent ozone off-gas discharge limits.
Corona Off-Gas
CARULITE 200 granular catalyst is used to destroy ozone off-gas produced in corona treating applications.
CARULITE 200 granular catalyst converts ozone into oxygen through a catalytic reaction and is not consumed by ozone, providing a long lifetime. Activated carbon, an alternative technology, chemically reacts with ozone and requires continual replacement. Another disadvantage of carbon is that it generates carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide and can be a fire hazard with high ozone concentrations.
Digital Printers and Commercial Air Filters
CARULITE 200 granular catalyst is used to destroy corrosive ozone produced in commercial digital printing applications.

CARULITE® 400 powder catalyst can also be used in printers and commercial air filters to effectively destroy low ozone concentrations. The CARULITE 400 catalyst is coated onto a metallic, ceramic, or cellulose substrate. Off-gas ozone is then passed through the catalyst coated substrate, where it is converted to oxygen.
Ethylene Oxide Destruction
CARULITE® 500 catalyst is used to effectively destroy ethylene oxide emissions resulting from sterilization of medical equipment and supplies. The catalyst converts toxic ethylene oxide at low temperatures to carbon dioxide and water.
The effectiveness of CARULITE 500 catalyst makes it the benchmark technology for destruction of toxic emissions of ethylene oxide in meeting stringent discharge regulations. Low-temperature destruction of ethylene oxide, coupled with long catalyst lifetime, provides a cost-effective solution to the problem of ethylene oxide emissions.
