This week, Carus chemists Rachel Dawson-Hince and Akila Karunanayake hosted the “Science ‘Fun’damentals” camp as part of the Illinois Valley Community College summer camp series.
The camp was open to local students ages 6, 7, and 8 years old and took place in the Illinois Valley Community College chemistry lab.
The “Science ‘Fun’damentals” camp focused on exploring the states of matter, reviewing basic lab safety rules, and discussing the process of the scientific method. Campers also learned about the Periodic Table of Elements and created bouncy balls using the power of chemistry.
At Carus, we are passionate about connecting with the next generation of scientists, and we enjoyed sharing our love of science and chemistry with local students. Our first IVCC summer camp was a success, and we look forward to offering more opportunities for young people to explore their interest in STEM.
In addition to the IVCC camp, Carus offers an annual Summer Science Camp for students entering 6th grade.
